The IQN Theory Exam has two sections: Medication Safety and Nursing Knowledge. The Medication Safety section includes drug calculations, IV therapy, high-risk medications, and New Zealand-specific prescribing and administration guidelines. The Nursing Knowledge section covers patient assessment, clinical decision-making, professional standards, New Zealand legislation (including the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act and the Nursing Council Standards), and evidence-based practice.
The exam is computer-based and typically consists of multiple-choice questions. The format and duration are set by NCNZ and can change — our tutors stay up to date and will prepare you for the current format at the time of your exam. Contact us for the most current information.
NCNZ allows multiple attempts at the IQN Theory Exam, but there are waiting periods between attempts and it is important to address the specific reasons for any unsuccessful attempt before resitting. The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) assesses clinical skills, patient communication, clinical reasoning, and patient safety in a series of timed simulation stations. It is challenging for IQNs primarily because the communication expectations, clinical documentation format, and scenario content are all specific to the New Zealand healthcare context — which is very different from healthcare systems in Asia, Africa, the UK, or elsewhere. Without NZ-specific preparation, even highly skilled nurses can struggle.

This depends on your starting point, exam timeline, and the programme you choose. Some nurses complete a focused OSCE preparation programme in 6–8 weeks. Others take 3–6 months for a full blended programme covering both theory and OSCE preparation. Our IQN Theory classes and OSCE coaching sessions are live and interactive. We do not believe in passive video learning for exam preparation — you learn by doing, asking questions, and receiving real-time feedback from a qualified nurse. Recordings of live sessions are available for revision purposes.
A reliable internet connection, a computer or tablet with camera and microphone, and access to Zoom or a similar platform. We will provide full technical guidance before your first session. If you have any tech concerns, our team will help you get set up.
Yes. If you are in the early stages of your NCNZ application, our IQN Theory classes are a perfect way to begin preparation while you wait. We can also offer general guidance about the NCNZ application process — though for specific registration decisions, you will need to communicate directly with NCNZ.
Yes. Many of our students are based in the Philippines, India, South Africa, the UK, or elsewhere and complete their theory and initial OSCE coaching fully online before relocating to New Zealand. We will work around your timezone as much as possible.
